There's a reason I said i'd never become a teacher when I was a young student. It's a hard job! Now that I find myself in the profession, I work hard to make sure I am happy, and don't experience burnout to a point of no return. In a blog by Vicki Davis, she mentions that it's important to choose battles that are worth fighting in order to avoid burnout. I find myself trying to anticipate possible hiccups, or struggles and pre-working my way around them. Perhaps too much of my effort has gone towards this in an effort to keep my life more simple. A great example of paralysis (burnout) by analysis. I have had the opportunity in one of my masters classes to consider a self-care plan that sets routines in place that are not extra work, rather healthy habits that work to avoid teacher burnout. My next step is to cut out my pre-worry habit about situations that have not happened yet, and replacing that brain space with healthy habits that are slightly more self-serving that keep me going throughout the work week. I've recognized that I need to remind myself to take restroom breaks! Choosing to say no sometimes so I can leave some room to recharge and keep going strong and happy will hopefully be a habit that stands the test of time.
