Teacher, Crafter, Student
I currently live in California, where I spent the majority of my childhood. My parents moved me and my brother here from England when I was in elementary school. I have very early memories of my dad driving new cars home every now and again, as he worked as a mechanical engineer for WRC rally teams. His passion for engineering rubbed off on me, as a result, I love to tinker with cars, scooters, bikes really anything I can get my hands on! I am currently restoring my high school dream car, which is a 1973 Volvo p1800es.
I found myself drawn to science due to its hands-on nature. When I first moved to the U.S., I was fascinated by all the new, strange creatures that England did not have. I believe it was this fascination that led me to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. My drive to further my education, and grow as much as possible comes from my mom. She is an extremely hard working person with an inherent growth mindset. I recently completed a Master's degree in the field of Education. The time I spent learning from highly trained educators focused on effective methods for STEM curriculum design and student engagement. I came to understand that like myself, students need to work with their hands to be able to fully understand how something works.
I have also called both Arizona and Colorado home, where I worked as a middle school and high school teacher. My experience teaching at a Diné school bordering the Navajo Reservation has taught me a lot about how different cultures work along side each other towards a common goal. My experiences inform who I am, and what I bring to my workplace; I hope to continue my professional growth as long as I possibly can.
During my free time, I like to make jewelry, sew, and climb. I set two goals for my interests this year: to learn how to silversmith, and to sew my own clothes. Through much frustration, and the help of YouTube creators, I have begun sewing my own clothes. I recently visited the Urban Workshop in Costa Mesa, California where I took a jewelry class, and a welding course. My next step is to create some soldered pieces from gold and silver! The experience inspired me to want to learn 3d printing and laser cutting.
